A second later she was run over by that steer.

"They're called 'reservations.' You guys are gonna LOVE 'em!"

"Me. You. A bottle of hooch. And my futon. WHADDYA say babe?"

"Hey remember when the whites landed and we thought they were gods 'n shit? Bad call, right guys? 'Member?"

Old school traffic jam.

Chronologically, in the next mural, the guys in blue are giving the Indians small pox riddled blankets.
I love how you can't find ONE scene in the entire town that depicts how horrible white people were to the American Indians. Every mural shows them as BFFs. Yeeeeaaaaahhhhh riiiiiggggghhhhhtttttt.

Apparently the cowboys and Indians were hella into polo ... ? WTF?

This guy was named "Irish Dick." Not kidding.
He was Toppenish's town drunk back in the day. That was his pet bear. They had a rocky relationship. He was such a lush that he traded his bear to a saloon owner for some whiskey. A while later the bear escaped. Dick said he'd get it back. This led to a legendary man/bear fight on main street that sent Dick to the hospital and the bear back to the bar.
Apparently, Dick had balls ...
Nice article. So when did it become necessary to use profanity when expressing your opinion in public? I understand your right to have your opinion and free speach, but come now. I can think of many more appropriate adjectives than the ones posted. Toppenish is not one of my favorite places on earth, but it is home to some people, as it should be respected as such. Poison as the reservation idea is or was it proved to be an opportunity/excuse for the "poor me" ideal that our tribes have come to. They have one thing right, casinos! Yippee they have found a way to finance the lives of drug addiction, gambling, and alcohol. I am the daughter of a non tribal member who has been poisoned by the tribal ways. Remember there are good and bad in every culture, color, and religion. Not a very AMERICAN way to poke fun at one.
ReplyDeleteHahahha, loved the captions. The art's kind of cool, in a kitschy/a bit strange way. Definitely seems like a fun day trip.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I'm not sure I'm quite reading the above comment correctly (???), but in numerous indigenous populations, a HUGE factor in depression/negative self-image/substance dependence issues is a sense of disconnection from culture/history/community (it's been talked about in a billion studies), and I don't think there's really any way to argue that the reservation system was well-intentioned or didn't hurt a LOT of people.
I'm Native American and well, those whites sure fooled us. Classic mix up!
ReplyDeleteInteresting photos. The paintings remind me of the scene in Back to the Future III, where Marty is about to go to 1885.
