This is Wesley Willis playing at the Graceland in Seattle in 2002.
Willis was schizophrenic and died in '03 but before he did he put an indelible impression on punk.
I heard about Willis recently from a friend and as I was watching his YouTube videos I kept wondering, "are people at these shows because they like the music or for the spectacle?"
Maybe both. And if people merely went to laugh then that's on them but I say kudos to Willis because he wanted to make rock and he did. He wanted to make music and he didn't let his disability get in his way. Quite the contrary – it was a part of his art.
I think that's cool.
