Massachusetts Senator Barney Frank answered a question I sent to Politico.com the other day.
*Note: My question is the second one.
Ben Smith, a politico writer and fellow Twitterer, asked for questions for the senator for a special segment they were planning.
I had just finished reading this Huffington Post story about how Frank said that Republican Scott Brown's Senate win killed the Dems super majority in the Senate and therefor their health care approach "was no longer appropriate."
So after I finished that article I tweeted this at Ben Smith:
"Ask Frank why the Republicans could pass all the legislation they wanted with a narrower majority but the Dems can't."
I asked that because I seem to remember, not too long ago, when the Republicans had simple majorities in both houses of Congress and did WHAT. EVER. THE. 'EFF. THEYWANTEDTO! So I was curious as to why, even with a super majority, the Democrats haven't done jack shit.
Frank's response in a nutshell:
"It is much harder to do things in a very depressed economy with revenues tied up and people hurting than it was in a good economy. So by the policies that led to this terrible recession that Obama inherited, things became more difficult."
Not what I was looking for Barns 'ole boy.
This is what it sounds like you just said:
"When the Republicans controlled Congress there was a lot more money to spend on the lawmaking process. Much more lobbying. We need to lobbyists to tell us what you vote with with their money so we can pass laws. No money? People can't pay lobbyists to tell us what to do. No lobbyists? No campaign contributions. No campaign contribs and we 'caint make no laws bro!"
I understand that tax money funds legislation and that in a recession tax funds are harder to come by but c'mon, that's kind of a cop out.
Hate to drop the "T" word here but if we're going to fund a global war, fight the recession, create jobs, save the auto industry, fix health care and pass more stimulus funds at the same time maybe we should at least THINK about raising taxes and funding programs that irresponsible, pandering politicians have let die over the years to make it look like they're creating "smaller government."
