For those of you who don't know what "flipping a bitch" is, it means to take a U-turn.
I never realized how powerful "The Daily Show" really is, and I don't think John Stewart did either. Until Jim Cramer. Stewart made Cramer look like a total bitch during their interview a few weeks ago. Since then, the entire CNBC network has totally turned their programming around.
What used to be PR fluff pieces about how totally awesome CEO's and execs are, it went to a channel-wide witch hunt for the assholes who fucked up the economy. (In a whiney Geraldo voice)
Last night, on some random show called "American Greed," a very angry-eye'd "broadcast journalist" peered at a bailout receiving CEO asking very pointed questions and not waiting for answers.
SO the media, who's members should have been investigating stories, got blindsided by the economic crisis. So now they need someone to attack in order to divert attention from their own ineptitude (I'm not speaking about the entire American media institution, just most of it. Especially TV "news".)
So they turn to the government. They're easy to blame because, to be fair, most of the time when something's wrong it is their fault. Because they fuck up a lot. Like a lot lot.
But elected officials know how to cover their asses. That's most of what their job consists of, shifting blame.
So senators and congressmen have hearings. Meaning, public inquisitions. After which, someone will burn. So, it works for everyone. Members of the media just flip their cameras on to record the very civilized lynching, thus atoning for their previous miscarriage of journalism (not really). And elected officials cover their asses because they are giving the American people someone to blame for the economic meltdown.
Done and done. All wrapped up with a little red ribbon on top.
Bullshit.
The fact is, we are just making rules for hedge fund investors, mortgage and lending firms, insurance companies and all sorts of economic players who hand a large hand in this global mess. And, save for a few publications, the media is just now taking notice that a giant log has just been violently flipped, revealing dirt that has been building up for years.
It took a financial meltdown, the brunt of which the American taxpayer will pay, for the people who should haves been doing their jobs, to actually DO THEIR FUCKING JOBS.
God bless America, my home sweet home.
