I couldn't find the original version of this song but this version is still good. I dig K'Naan because he's a really good lyricist but more than that his rhymes are earnest, real, hopeful and proud.
Probably because he's a Somali-born, Canadian poet. But whatever it is, I dig lyrics like this:
"How did Mandela get the will to surpass the everyday
When injustice had him caged and trapped in every way?
How did Ganghi ever withstand the hunger strikes and all?
Didn't do it to gain power or money if I recall."
I think this message is immensely more powerful than what mainstream hip-hop is putting out there right now. Although 'hos, money and Bentleys do make for interesting music videos ...
