Pasma's story on Grindley has holes, sheriff says

We just got a bunch of affidavits from Whitman County about the sheriff's investigation about what happened to Kristen Grindley.

If you don't already know, she was found lying in a pool of blood way outside of town on Pullman-Albion road on Nov. 11, 2009.

She is recovering but has trouble speaking or remembering what happened that night. The sheriff said there are some inconsistencies in her boyfriend's story.

The boyfriend, Richard Pasma, told investigators that he had spent that entire night with a friend. Turns out he left his friend's house at 11 p.m. He spent some time with an ex-girlfriend, which he didn't mention to investigators, but she admitted to seeing Pasma that night:

But the oddest part of Pasma's story was the fact that he told deputies that he was near the scene of the crime around the time a passer-by called 911 and emergency personnel responded. In fact, police cameras captured footage of Pasma's truck near the scene at 2:11 a.m. the morning Grindley was found.

Pasma said he was "four-wheeling" in the area to blow off some steam because of a dispute he and Grindley had had earlier in that evening.

But there are other inconsistencies. Pasma stated that after driving around country roads and coming upon the scene of Grindley's injury (which he said he thought was a car crash at the time) he said he went home and went to bed. He said a little while later he was woken up by people outside messing with his recycling bins.

But the deputy came back to look at the bins later. He observed this:

Deputies also observed and recorded Pasma's initial reaction to the news that his girlfriend had just been found bleeding to death miles outside of town. They had this to say:

Now, none of these bits of information alone are very damning. They can't really even be called evidence. But they are the types of things that lead officers to question, and ultimately uncover, evidence.

At this time Pasma is still only a person of interest in the case and the sheriff said they have no suspects. But he said they expect to file charges soon.

  4. So, is there a reason why the police aren't giving the POI tickets for reckless driving, speeding, leaving the scene of an accident, multiple vehicle infractions while they are awaiting the forensic evidence? Are his license and insurance current? If he can't pay the tickets then they can at least arrest him for outstanding warrants. Better than him running around like nothing ever happened.
