This is a scene from "Good Night, And Good Luck," an amazing film about Edward R. Murrow, his unflappable courage and his boundless honesty. The man is my hero.
Ed was a history maker. He reported from rooftops during the London Blitz – while people were scrambling for bomb shelters. He took down McCarthy and defended the First Amendment at a time when it was at its most fragile – during the Red Scare.
But his most fearless act, in my opinion, was taking on corporate, the networks.
A battle he ultimately lost, but one that I respect him all the more for. He saw the days of 24-hour news networks, their divisive drivel and their drain on society coming. He saw it coming from a loooong way away.
"Our history will be what we make it ... Just once in a while let us exalt the importance of ideas and information."
"But if they are right and this instrument is good for nothing but to amuse, entertain and insulate – then the tube is flickering now and we will soon see that the whole struggle is lost."
